We Mourn The Loss of One Of AAMA’s Founding Members

When I received news of the passing of Wayne Blair on July 25, 2012 I immediately thought of the first time I met Wayne. I was attending a media education conference in Toronto Ontario in 1995. Wayne was waiting in the front row for the morning’s keynote speaker. I was a newbie to the whole “media literacy” movement, but after spending a few minutes with Wayne, and discovering we were both from Alberta, my life was changed. Nearly two decades later my entire professional career is devoted to media education and literacy, and it’s in no small part due to the influence of Wayne Blair. I am just one of many who have been motivated by Wayne to view our mass media culture through a critical lens.

On behalf of all of us at AAMA, our board members including Nicholas Spillios, Henry Johns, and myself, and our vice-president Dulcie Gretton and president Kerry Bennett, we wish the best to Wayne’s wife Iris and their children. We truly miss this wonderful and gentle man who loved media and technology with an intelligent enthusiasm.
